Overview

Syrian Arab Air Force (Arabic: القوات الجوية العربية السورية‎, Al Quwwat al-Jawwiyah al Arabiya as-Souriya) is the Aviation branch of the Syrian Armed Forces. It was established in 1948. Land-based air defense systems are grouped under the Syrian Air Defense Force, which split from both the Air Force and the Army.

Air Force Ensign

Here are two screenshots of Syrian flags from a July 19 Al-Jazeera news broadcast. The image shows a row of four flags, all of them military-related, including the Air Force ensign.

The air force emblem on that flag looks like a combination of the two old AF emblems [below]).

I noticed that Wikipedia images are incomplete. All flags have a motto over the branches' emblems. The motto is: "Watan, Sharaf, Ikhlas" (Homeland, Honour, Sincerity) in Kufi script.

Former Air Force Ensign

Visible in an ACIG article, the current and former flags of the Syrian Air Force are on display at the Military Museum of Damascus (photo).

Since the older flag shows a lighter/greyer shade and the new one a brighter shade, could it be that both flags have the same color and the old one is just faded by the Sun?
António Martins-Tuválkin, 11 Jun 2007

On the Warflags website, the flags of the United Arab Republic of 1958-61 are shown. The Air Force ensign is almost identical to the current Syrian Air Force ensign [below], which leads me to suspect other Syrian military flags might also be carryovers from the UAR period (as is, most prominently, the current Syrian national flag).

Unknown Military Flag

This photo shows a Syrian military colour (or ceremonial flag) during a parade in the Syrian army academy (photo taken presumably in the 1970's). The flag is a horizontal triband (light-dark-light) with a device in the center and fringe around.
